Trees
Commercial lumber is classified into ‘hardwoods’ and ‘softwoods’. Hardwoods
come from broad leaf or deciduous trees and softwoods come from evergreen
or coniferous trees.

While most commercial hardwoods are physically
harder or denser than most commercial softwoods, the classification refers

to the type of tree and does not always describe the hardness of the wood.
Wood is cellular material and due to the microstructure of longitudinal cells
wood has different structural properties parallel to the grain vs. perpendicular
to the grain.

Parallel to the grain wood is strong and stiff; perpendicular it is
weak and deformable (Fig. 3.1.1). On the basis of performance by unit weight,

construction timber is as least as stiff and as strong as structural steel.
Commercially marketed lumber includes dozens of tree species.

When trees
are commercially cut or ‘harvested’ the cellular hollows are filled with moisture,
commonly called ‘sap’. Trees are sawn into rough lumber while in a saturated
or ‘green’ condition. Timber which will be shipped long distances from the
sawmill, or be made into finish lumber is ‘seasoned’, which dries most of the
sap. This seasoning is accomplished through stacking the wood in the open air
for a period of months or more commonly by heating it in a kiln for a period
